The church of St. Hilda is set in the wooded valley at Ellerburn near Thornton-Le-Dale and is the mother church of the benefice as it is by far the oldest.
St Hilda’s attracts numerous visitors each year who come to sample the peace and tranquillity of this Grade 2* listed building.
The church dates as far back as 1050AD with some parts as old as 850AD. As you enter the church you see the font under the West window. The font, like the stone altar in the chancel, are the oldest parts of the church. In 1905 restoration work, by Caroe was completed and present day parishioners still benefit from his vision and foresight. The vestry and porch were additions designed by him.
